Many
years ago I wrote a guitar instruction book which, over the
years, became "the" teaching book
for many institutions including the Calgary
Board of Education, Adult Education Department. The
book
is based on the knowledge and experience I gained playing and
recording with such guitar masters as Scotland's Archie
Fisher and England's Martin
Carthy. I also played with the Corries
and Liam Clancy & Tommy
Makem.
I was the Artistic Director of the Calgary
Folk Festival for the first 8 years of its' existence.
I am also the founder and President of the Calgary
Folk Club which is now in its' 31 Season. I state
these facts to illustrate that I have been involved in "Folk
Music" for years and have a thorough grounding in the guitar
styles associated with this genre. To date I have played on
over 25 recordings, I was a studio guitarist on 3 TV Series,
have played on many Radio shows and was honored to have Tom
Coxworth of CKUA
feature my accomplishments and contributions in his "Folkroutes"
program last November. I am also very honored to be asked by
Tom Paxton to be his accompanist
when he visits Alberta.
The acquisition of guitar skills is never-ending but there are
many techniques and "tricks -of-the-trade" which are
accessible to the hobby or recreational player. The book I wrote
illustrated many such techniques and has resulted in many Calgary
guitarists playing at a high standard. Since writing the book
I have honed both playing and teaching techniques - I had to
because my students were progressing so quickly! The end result
is that a large number of people are enjoying playing this wonderful
instrument and that is what is truly important.
I was a Music Specialist with the Calgary
Board of Education for more years than I care to
mention but I do bring a professional attitude and skills to
teaching the guitar. My present clients are all motivated and
sincere in their desire to learn . Some are playing for their
own enjoyment; others are preparing to perform locally. In all
cases I create a program around the needs and aspirations of
each individual.
I like to discuss with each prospective client what they hope
to achieve and if I feel I can help them meet their goals, we
then enter into a contractual agreement. I love to work with
people who want to learn. I will happily teach beginners or
experienced guitarists; I just ask that they are committed to
learning.
You are more than welcome to call me at 780 484 0201 or e-mail

I will be very pleased to answer any questions you may have
regarding guitar lessons or just plain information on the guitar.
